Guest Collections Series: Concept and Idea in Art. Works from the Brokken Zijp Foundation of Modern and Contemporary Art (Liempde, NL)

Books are a commonplace feature of our everyday lives, whether they appear as physical objects on our bookshelves and desks or are transmitted via cyberspace to the screens of our electronic devices. For hundreds of years, books have constituted an essential medium by which to convey knowledge and to provide entertainment. In numerous manifestos written at the beginning of the 20th century, visual artists, including the Dadaist Kurt Schwitters, anticipated the discovery of the book as an object of visual art.

The artist’s book, i.e. a book conceived as an object of visual art, emerged indeed in the 1960s in the wake of the Fluxus movement and the introduction of concept art. As such, the artist’s book is more than a compilation of paintings or illustrations presented in book form; it is a distinct artistic genre which, like other genres, gave artists a means of exploring unique realms of color, light, space and form. Although one particularly fascinating aspect of the artist’s book arises in connection with the conventional characteristics of the book medium, the artist’s book is not to be regarded as a kind of artistic hybrid, consisting of art and literature or image and text, but as an image object in its own right. In keeping with this unexpected notion of a book, the aim of the exhibition Concept and Idea in Art is to place a spotlight on what has developed into a special artistic genre. The »Guest Collections« series will feature around 150 artist’s books from the Netherlands-based Brokken Zijp Foundation of Modern and Contemporary Art. These works will be presented together with a selection of sculptures from the collections of both the Ege Art & Culture Foundation and the Brokken Zijp Foundation of Modern and Contemporary Art. The composite exhibition will give visitors an opportunity to consider the development of the artist’s book since its emergence in the 1960s and to reflect on the artist’s book in light of the broader discourse on the nature and significance of the abstract image.
