Collecting, conserving, exhibiting and conveying:

A vibrant venue for contemporary art – in Freiburg and right at the center of a private enterprise!

The relevance that contemporary art can have for us as we confront the fundamental issues of our contemporary lives provides the rationale for the conservation and exhibition of the Ege Art and Culture Foundation’s collection in the Kunstraum Alexander Bürkle. Founded in 2008 by the Ege entrepreneurial family, the Foundation is committed to maintaining the vitality of its collection of largely minimalist works from painting, sculpture, photography and video.

Ever since 2004, the collection at the distinguished Museum in Freiburg has been open to the public in connection with various regular events and has gained extensive international acclaim for its concentrated profile.

The Museum puts on three to four exhibitions every year in which younger contemporary artists are given an opportunity to exhibit their works in a dialogue with established international elements in the collection. On these and other occasions, the public is invited to encounter the works in a quiet setting of clear and open exhibition rooms comprising nearly 1,000 square meters of space.

In recognition of the fact that contemporary art is not always easy to comprehend, the Museum offers free guided tours that are open to the general public and regularly plays host to art symposia and lectures on the occasion of special exhibitions. This extensive outreach program is rounded off by a series of publications that document past exhibitions or present the work of individual artists.

While the Kunstraum Alexander Bürkle is greatly appreciated as an exhibition institution by experts and visitors, its overall reputation as a vibrant venue of art also derives from its close connection to the consumer electronics and technology enterprise Alexander Bürkle, a company that has been run by three generations of the Ege family since its founding in Freiburg in 1900. This is not only because Paul Ege, whose passion for the visual arts has been a driving force behind the collection, has remained a senior partner in the enterprise until today. Indeed, the exhibition hall is located at the heart of the Alexander Bürkle Group, on the premises of the original company headquarters in Freiburg. This proximity to the world of work and production emphasizes the centrality of culture in the day-to-day affairs of the enterprise. Moreover, working outwards from this focal point, the Museum has become an important component in the Alexander Bürkle Group’s commitment to social responsibility and the local and regional promotion of education, art and culture.
